Calgary

Welcome to the Calgary Regional Special Education Council! We are here to lead, serve, and support the interests of those educators in special education working with students with diverse learning needs. It is the vision and mission of our council to provide current information through Professional Development in a variety of formats. The benefits of joining our council are numerous with the first being you have a voice into what workshops we provide, the current research in the area of special education, workshop information and yearly conferences to attend to name a few. Click here for more information on joining the Special Education Council.

It is exciting to announce that our executive council this year consists of representatives from all six districts and from all divisions and administrative levels within our school board. The council is expanding how we offer our workshops as our district covers a large area. We are introducing webinars, as well as face to face along with streamlining some workshops so others in distant locals can participate at the same time. Numerous presenters are offering follow ups sessions via video conferencing.

We’d love to hear from you as to how we can support your professional development on a personal level and school projects. This year all four Universities in Calgary have shown interest in attending our workshops and also making proposals as to how we can support professors and students at the post- secondary level as well.

Jennie Mattatall was a huge success and has already been booked by three boards this month. Her in-depth and comprehensive session involved working with students with Autism. Different than many assessment based programs and traditional treatment of time-out rooms and dissuasive behavioral after the child has acted out, she delves to the root of the problem and does a complete and detailed observation of what is transpiring with the student prior to working collaboratively with teachers. Her breadth of knowledge was vast and her ability to capture the audience with a myriad of scenarios kept teachers prompting her with queries of their own. She moved swiftly through an extensive amount of information gaining momentum as the evening went on. Her company name – All About Me Inc. is about gaining insight to where the student is at the moment, revealing why and how the student uses such behavior and unveiling the mystery piece by piece. She realizes each child is unique and thus individual tactics need to be used with each yet she exposed numerous simple “break through” techniques that all teachers can use with any student. Teachers were having moments of ah…..ha.... throughout the night as they were working collaboratively through case studies of their own. A testament to her skills set was that no one left early and many remained for well over an hour after the session was complete. On November 17th, the Calgary Regional put on a UDL workshop for its members.

We have booked Nathan Ory for late fall of 2012 School Year and look forward to many of you joining us at the Special Education Conference.
